City of Literature Quebec (Canada) hosted the annual meeting of UNESCO Cities of Literature in October. The city asked its fellow Cities of Literature to collaborate on two projects: Toponymy and Multivox.

In Toponymy, the Cities of Literature expose their roots in words and images, telling the origin of their names: toponyms from the past, imagined today. The works from the various cities were on display on panels around the city during the week of the meeting and can still be viewed online. We asked artist Anne Feddema to create new work for this project. You can view and read it below.

For the literary audio work Multivox, 23 poets from Cities of Literature voiced their poems. Multivox was the opening performance of festival Québec en toutes lettres on Oct. 12. We asked Marrit Jellema to create work for this project. You can read it below.

All cities also bring two new, local children’s books to the annual meetings, which are given to the host city’s library. This year, we brought Sipke op stoom by Lida Dijkstra and Abe en aardigman by Tialda Hoogeveen and Yke Reeder to Quebec.
