Explore the North, Tryater and Leeuwarden UNESCO City of Literature are again organising a masterclass series Reciting, for writers who want to work on presenting their work. The masterclasses will be given by Zen Roorda, Nyk de Vries, Marrit Jellema and Janneke Brakels. Participation is free of charge.

For whom?

The series of masterclasses is intended for writers who have already published prose or poetry, and who want to explore how they can best present themselves and their texts on stage and discover which skills and qualities they can use to do so. In each session, you will work with a different teacher on the same text(s), in order to experience and try out the different effects of different forms and techniques in your reading. This can be done in any language.

When?

You will attend all masterclasses, on Thursday evenings 16 May, 23 May, 30 May and 6 June from 19:30 to 22:00 at Podium Explore, Bagijnestraat 59 in Leeuwarden. After these masterclasses, there will be a session on 13 June to prepare a presentation, where you can show what you have learned in a small group. This presentation will be on Thursday 20 June, also in Podium Explore in Leeuwarden. So keep these six dates free in your agenda.

Teachers

The masterclasses are taught by four different teachers with different backgrounds and areas of expertise. In the first session, teacher, actor and director Zen Roorda will work with you on theatre techniques: using your body, voice and the space around you. In the second session, poet Nyk de Vries teaches recitation: diction, tension building, rhythm and music. In the third master class, Leeuwarden city poet and spoken-word artist Marrit Jellema teaches you to connect with the audience: improvising, using spontaneity and humour in your recitation. Singer teacher Janneke Brakels will teach the fourth session, on voice recording techniques: how your voice and your text sound for a podcast or audiobook, and using recordings in performances.

Registration

There is room for up to eight participants. Participation is free and offered by Explore the North, Tryater and Leeuwarden City of Literature. You can apply until Friday 3 May using this form. We will make a selection based on the applications and let you know by e-mail whether you can participate. If you are selected, we expect you to participate in all meetings.
