Masterful storyteller Suzanna Jansen comes to Lemmer for a special lecture on her Essay for Heritage Month. In Project RUST, she investigates how in the 1950s and 1960s countless women fell ill from ‘nervous exhaustion’. They were tired, had vague complaints and often received the same advice: rest at a convalescent home.

But what actually happened in such a rest home? What was wrong with these women? And what consequences did their absence have for the family left behind at home? Suzanna Jansen read letters from women who stayed in convalescent homes and spoke with their children. She heard how young girls were taken out of school to take over their mother’s tasks, while other children ended up temporarily in boarding school.

Starting from the story of her own mother, Jansen begins to record this forgotten history. After the lecture, there is ample opportunity to ask questions and exchange personal memories and stories.

There is book sales and the opportunity to have books signed. Coffee or tea upon arrival is included.
