The first edition of “Deade Dichters Deklamatoarium” (Dead Poets’ Declamation) in Friesland was held in a packed Johanneskerk church in Weidum on Sunday, September 14th. Nine poet-reciters spotlighted the poetry of twelve deceased Frisian poets. Musicians Axl Hofstede and Wilco Hoekstra provided musical interludes and accompaniment. Poet of Friesland, Arjan Hut, presented the afternoon.
This first edition featured works by poets who have passed away in the past ten years: Willem Abma, Jelle Kaspersma, Tsjisse Hettema, Jan Dotinga, Josse de Haan, Hindirk Hannema, Bartle Laverman, Aggie van der Meer, Abel Oostra, Jacobus Q. Smink, Griet Witbraad, and Piter Yedema.
The presence of family members of the deceased poets contributed to the special atmosphere. Family and other attendees were very enthusiastic about the afternoon’s format. The organizers decided to expand the event and make it an annual tradition.
