The fourteenth edition of the City of Ostend Poetry Competition kicked off in September 2025. Over 900 participants from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom submitted a total of 1,587 poems.
The winners were announced and honored during the official ceremony at De Grote Post on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Second prize went to Erik de Boer, municipal poet of Smallingerland, for his poem Cementmolens.
CEMENTMOLENS
Er rijden hele kleine cementmolens.
Ik zou graag wat moois zeggen.
Ik zou graag postzegels op uw ogen willen plakken.
Is het vreemd dat mij dat niet lukt?
Nee, dat denk ik niet.
Ik denk hele andere dingen.
De kleine cementmolens hebben het druk.
Ik wil niet.
Ik zou niet willen.
Ik zou de tijd nemen.
Even maar en ergens neerleggen.
Als je nou, al was het maar heel stil, even telt hoe veel kleine cementmolens er rijden.
Zou het wat uit maken.
Zou het een bepaalde waarde hebben.
Fundamenten en heipalen bestaan ook alleen maar uit uitgedroogde brei.
Alles moet vol en dichtgesmeerd.
Iedereen moet weg en buitengesloten.
Overal moet logica en duidelijkheid.
Altijd.
Maar de kleine cementmolens rijden;

Erik de Boer (Drachten, 1991) is a Dadaist visual artist, theatre maker, and poet, with roots in Drachten, where he lives, works, and serves as the municipal poet. His work addresses social themes such as the environment, power, greed, and consumerism, but personal stories also find their way into his creations. The common thread throughout his oeuvre is the ‘friendly alienation’.
