Author of Frisian and Dutch children’s books Lida Dijkstra talks about her life as a writer. She made her debut in 1994 with the Frisian children’s book Sjoerd Stiensma syn reis troch de tiid (Sjoerd Stiensma’s Journey Through Time) and has since written picture books, books for beginning readers and older youth. Several of her children’s books have been published in both languages, with her providing the translation herself.
Lida’s work has won numerous awards. In 2025, she won both a Silver and a Gold Griffel for De wonderverteller (The Wonder Storyteller). The Griffel jury: ‘Giving famous stories new life. That is Lida Dijkstra’s strength. In De wonderverteller she goes one step further by showing within the story how stories can be told.’
From 2020 to 2022, she was Berneboeke-ambassadeur fan Fryslân (Children’s Book Ambassador of Friesland) and in that role visited more than 450 groups at 150 primary schools.
