The literary essay balances between fiction and non-fiction. The essay can be about any subject and is like a walk without a map: a search, with the writer’s fascination as a guide. Detours and side paths are part of the route. Essential is discovering what touches the writer – and subsequently also the reader – in theme, style, method and/or perspective.
You become acquainted with the essay in many forms. You read and write your own first exploratory pieces on a self-chosen subject. At this level you write short texts to train yourself in recognising a subject and finding connections across different areas.
This course is a follow-up to the Writing Trainings organised by the Schrijversvakschool. You write essays, read exploratory texts and expand your arsenal. Experience shows that the skills you develop in Essay 1 can be applied to any other literary genre.
The course is taught by Doeke Sijens, writer and lecturer at the Schrijversvakschool. The course costs € 550. Members of dbieb receive a discount of € 30.
