Author, columnist and gardener Gerbrand Bakker comes to Drachten. He wrote novels such as Boven is het stil, Juni, De omweg and De kapperszoon. His debut novel Boven is het stil was awarded, adapted for theatre and made into a film. His novels have been translated worldwide.
In 2025, his latest novel Boedel was published. A personal story about dividing the estate after the death of a family member. After their mother’s death, Gerbrand Bakker and his brothers and sister empty the family home. They debate the emotional and material value of objects, such as a silver lemon pricker and boxes of paracetamol. Despite discussions, sometimes settled by drawing lots, they divide the possessions in harmony, guided by their mother’s words: “Whoever quarrels gets nothing!”
Bakker reflects on the meaning of things and remembers his mother’s last years through personal objects. Written in a pleasant, flowing style, he tells about this novel.
