Gerard Klein survived the Holocaust. He was in hiding for three years in Bolsward, his older brother Hapi for three years in Bakhuizen, and their parents at four different addresses in southeast Friesland. Eddy van der Noord wrote about three generations of the Klein family in Ontworteld.

Despite his advanced age, Klein is still vivid, with a sharp memory and great storytelling ability. Together with Van der Noord, he tells how three wars – the First and Second World Wars and 7 October 2023 – damaged the Klein family, but also how fortunate turning points helped them survive. A dynamic duo with a compelling story.
