In the heart of Rinsumageast, a warm and atmospheric literary afternoon will be held in honour of Frisian writer Ype Poortinga (1910-1985). Poortinga gained widespread recognition for his collection of Frisian folk tales, legends and fairy tales. In his characteristic Daf, he travelled across Friesland in search of stories that might otherwise have been lost forever. Stories of the people, of the land, of ordinary lives – stories that give our culture colour and depth. He published the tales in seven substantial volumes.
Master storyteller Douwe Kootstra will bring Poortinga’s legacy to life and speak about the origins of these ancient folk tales. Storytellers Aggie Meijer and Thom Boonstra will perform readings from the collected works. Marcel Smit, an established name in Frisian music, will provide the musical accompaniment and perform a Poortinga text set to music.
