Adwin de Kluyver writes his first young adult novel: Aouda & Passepartout. It is a thrilling reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic Around the World in Eighty Days.

In the original, the English gentleman Phileas Fogg makes a wager in 1872: he will travel around the world in eighty days. In De Kluyver’s new version, two other voices tell the story. Passepartout, the rebellious French servant who fled Paris as a young revolutionary, and Aouda, the eighteen-year-old Indian widow rescued from the funeral pyre along the way.

De Kluyver writes in beautiful, vivid prose. The two protagonists fight not only against the clock and a Scotland Yard detective, but above all for their own freedom. Who do they want to become?

Adwin de Kluyver lives and works in Leeuwarden (in a former prison) and sometimes on Vlieland. He previously published several books for adults about polar expeditions and voyages of discovery.

Aouda & Passepartout is published in June by Lemniscaat.
