In the lecture series Spraakmakende boeken (‘Books That Matter’), leading specialists from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen discuss literary works. This evening, Daniëlle van den Brink will explore Intermezzo by Sally Rooney.

Intermezzo is a contemporary novel about two Irish brothers, each dealing in their own way with the death of their father. Peter is in his early thirties and a successful lawyer in Dublin struggling with insomnia and his relationships with two women. His 22-year-old brother Ivan is a thoughtful chess player who, after their father’s death, meets 36-year-old Margaret.

Sally Rooney is internationally renowned for works including the novel Normal People, which was also adapted into a television series.
