Now that public life is slowly starting up again, in June the Westerkerk organizes a few intimate cultural and literary Friday evenings under the title “Vrij” (free). On Friday June 12, Leeuwarden City of Literature presents three Frisian poets, who recite from brand new work. In between, visitors enjoy a simple, tasty meal.

Arjan Hut, Elmar Kuiper and Sigrid Kingma present new work to a small, curious audience in the atmospheric theatre hall of the Westerkerk. You are expected (alone, in pairs or with your family) at 6 p.m. and you will be seated at a cozy covered table in the hall. After bread and nuts, the first poet recites. A tasty vegan pasta and a second presentation follow. After some sweet treats it’s time for the third poet. The evening will be presented by the young writer / actor Stijn Schootstra. Afterwards there is room for an informal drink and chat at your own table. Note: the program is in Frisian and Dutch.

About the poets

Former city poet and current “Wâld” poet Arjan Hut (1976) went to Malta in the Cultural Capital Year 2018. There it was rumored that this was the first time he left Leeuwarden since 1991. His discoveries and experiences are echoed in his new (fifth) collection of poetry “Fjoertoer yn it Wâld” (lighthouse in the forest). Elmar Kuiper (1969) writes Frisian and Dutch poems and theater texts. He is also a visual artist, singer and filmmaker. The poetry in his new collection “Wite Mûle, Swarte Molke” (white mouth, black milk) is more direct and also more confrontational than before. Sigrid Kingma (1989) studied Dutch and Frisian and made her debut in 2016 with her poetry collection “Reade triedleas / Red wireless”. Recently she was inspired for 11 new poems by the 11 fountains (placed in the Frisian cities in 2018).
