To give the Frisian language a stronger place in childcare and with childminders, reading aloud in Frisian takes place throughout Friesland in September. The annual Read-Aloud Weeks draw attention to reading for children aged 2 to 8 years. Because reading aloud is not only enjoyable – it is crucial for the language development of young children, especially for a minority language like Frisian.
This year, specially developed materials from Tys & Teske appear for the first time, created for pedagogical professionals and aligned with national methods. The theme is ‘Spotlight on!’ – aligned with the national Children’s Book Week in October. Toddlers take home the very first Read-Aloud booklet from Tys & Teske, available in Frisian, Bildts, Stellingwarfs and Franekers. For older children, a new Keimpe booklet is published. All booklets are available free of charge at Frisian libraries.
In addition, there are reading, dance and music performances, a Tys & Teske treasure hunt, and online videos for children of all ages.
