All of the Netherlands will be reading the book “Onder de Paramariboom” (Under the Paramaribo Tree), written by Johan Fretz, in November 2025. Reading a good book together sparks conversations and connects people. And when everyone’s reading the same book, you don’t want to miss it! Pick up “Onder de Paramariboom” for free at the library this November, even if you’re not a member. “Onder de Paramariboom” is also available as a large-print book and can be borrowed from the online library as an e-book and audiobook.
“Onder de Paramariboom” by Johan Fretz
From a young age, Johannes Fretz was asked where he came from, where he really came from. But it wasn’t until he was invited to perform in Paramaribo and flew with his mother to her birthplace that he asked himself this question for the first time. Suriname evoked more recognition in him than he had imagined, and it was time to bury his family’s demons once and for all. Under the Paramaribo Tree was chosen because November 25, 2025, will mark exactly 50 years since Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands.
The Whole Class Reads
Under the Paramaribo Tree by Johan Fretz is also available for secondary schools (upper grades HAVO and VWO) under the title The Whole Class Reads. They can order a lesson package containing 32 books and a lesson plan. For pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO) grades 1 & 2 and primary school students in grades 7 & 8, the book “Soldaat Wojtek” by Bibi Dumon Tak was chosen.
