The Mennonite church on the Wirdumerdijk will host the premiere of Requiem ta treast, a remarkable choral work by composer Marcus Veenstra, set to texts by the late Frisian poet and theologian Willem Abma (1942-2024).
Requiem ta treast explores the grief of losing a loved one through a dialogue between the deceased, the bereaved and bystanders. The work moves from darkness to light, ending in comfort and reconciliation – its final words being: ‘de dea is oerwûn’ (‘death is conquered’).
Veenstra and Abma first met at De Schakel in Camminghaburen and went on to compose several songs together, of which God, gedachte, gefoel and Liet fan treast are the best known. This choral work is the culmination of their long-standing collaboration.
