In a good column, the personal is connected with larger societal issues. By following the writer’s train of thought, we get to know them better. Like poetry, its strength lies in saying everything with just a few well-chosen strokes of the pen.
This Writers’ School course teaches you how to write such a good column yourself. How do you say much with few words? What voice do you write it in? And what do you have to tell?
Through exercises you will delve deeper into structure, style, perspective and suggestive writing. You learn to avoid clichés and maintain tension. You read columns by published authors to explore the genre. Feedback from the instructor and fellow students offers a broader perspective on your own themes. By the end of the course you will have completed several columns.
The course is taught by Kirsten van Santen, writer, columnist and lecturer at the Writers’ School. The course costs 575 euros. Members of dbieb receive a discount of 30 euros.
