On the evening of Thursday, June 18, the winner of the Frisian Essay Competition—organized by the Writers’ Union (De Skriuwersbûn) and Tresoar – was announced at the warm and cozy Theater De Bres. Following an introduction by Ammerins Moss-de Boer, chair of De Skriuwersbûn – who discussed the purpose of the prize and reflected on the previous edition held in 1994 – Bennie Huisman performed a beautiful musical piece to set the mood. The jury, consisting of Abe de Vries, Doeke Sijens, and Jelma Knol, had the pleasure of reading the 20 valid entries and produced a detailed report, which was read aloud by Jelma Knol.

The three finalists – Anna Bilker, Josephine Wernsen, and Tamara Feddema – then read their essays. Of the three entries – covering topics ranging from grammar and irregular verbs to the sound of ants and the raw necessity of writing itself – Tamara Feddema’s essay ultimately emerged as the winner. She took home the €500 prize. The announcement was made through the presentation of the latest issue of Ensafh., which features Tamara on the cover.

The winning essays and the jury report can be read in the new issue of Ensafh., available for purchase via the magazine’s website or at the relevant shop.
