The future of the Rely Jorritsmafonds is guaranteed, but it is not yet clear how this will be done. The municipality of Leeuwarden is working out various scenarios.

Alderman Hein Kuiken and representatives of the Frysk Letterkundich Museum and Dokumintaasjesintrum (FLMD) agreed during a meeting on Friday. It is already clear, says the alderman, that in the future the mayor and aldermen will no longer belong to the board of the foundation. That is outdated. “Maybe we should hand it over to a foundation dedicated to Frisian literature.” But until then, the mayor and aldermen will continue to manage the fund and award the prize, Kuiken assures.

The FLMD, which organizes the Rely Jorritsma contest and takes care of everything around it, is satisfied with the results of the conversation. “The municipality will keep the foundation for now”, says secretary Pieter de Groot. For the time being, the fund still has enough money to be able to pay prize winners. There is more than enough money available from leasing land – the fund will soon purchase more land – and investments to be able to pay winners in the coming years.

Work for this year’s Rely Jorritsma contest can be submitted up to and including 9 May.
