Afûk today launched the new Frisian language learning app SKREP at Café Neushoorn in Leeuwarden. Deputy Eke Folkerts revealed the name, after which the app immediately became available for download in the app stores. What makes SKREP special is that it is the first app to use advanced AI technology for speech recognition specifically for Frisian.
The app is intended for Dutch speakers who want to learn Frisian, for example for social situations or at work. It is also well suited for beginner Frisian speakers who want to improve their skills. Sita Postma, project leader and head of Education at Afûk: ‘The app allows people to get acquainted with Frisian in an accessible way. This is how we want to keep the language vital. The app can be a taster for an existing Frisian course, but can also work as a refresher during or after a Frisian course.’
For the technical development, Afûk worked closely with Mensora, the Leeuwarden-based company that makes AI implementation simple, safe and effective for organisations. Mensora’s platform allows for continuous improvement: the app adapts to the progress and needs of individual users, as well as to new developments in the Frisian language.
Why SKREP?
The name was not chosen by chance. SKREP rhymes with Fryske taalleerapp (Frisian language learning app) and refers to the verb skreppe: to work hard and with effort. In addition, SKREP has the typically Frisian letter combination skr and the word is pronounceable for everyone, including non-Frisian speakers.
The app is available for free download in the app stores from today. More information at www.skrep.frl.
The development of the language learning app was made possible in part by a financial contribution from the province of Fryslân.
