Nine Ladies of the Smallingerland Council were inaugurated through an online meeting on 8 March as reading ambassadors for the Drachten Library. Wally Postma, Silvia Sikkema, Annemarie Hogeveen, Nicolle ter Doest, Maria Le Roy, Johanna Mast, Lucienne Meinsma, Anita Merkus and Angela Visser yesterday received a book pin and a book package from Karin Meijerman, director of the Drachten Library.

As a reading ambassador, the Ladies of the Council will work in the coming period to stimulate reading among children and parents in Smallingerland and to increase reading pleasure. They do this by reading aloud in schools and by entering into a conversation about reading with parents and children. Reading consultant of the library Marga Zitman says: “You can often get a lot more out of a book than you think. By engaging in a conversation about a book you discover other worlds and you get even more pleasure in reading (aloud)! ”.

The importance of reading

The vocabulary and reading skills of a child who reads every day grow instantly. Because of the knowledge they gain from books, they also enlarge their world. With a higher reading level, other subjects also become more accessible. This leads to better school performance and children can develop their talent better. Reading is important for everything you want to achieve in life. That is why it is very important to encourage children to read freely.

To encourage children to read a lot, the Drachten Library is committed to reading pleasure. The library does this together with schools, pre-school institutions, health centers and other social organizations.
