Every year, UNESCO celebrates International Mother Language Day on February 21. This day is dedicated to linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
For UNESCO, languages are the instrument to keep cultural heritage alive. Preserving mother tongues preserves the linguistic and cultural tradition and raises awareness of the differences between ethnic groups. This may lead to more understanding.
In Leeuwarden, the Europeesk Buro foar Lytse Talen, Mercator European Knowledge Center and Slieker Film will screen the Irish language film An Cailín Ciúin (The quiet girl) on Tuesday evening 21 February. Tickets cost 11 euros and can be reserved on the website of Slieker Film.
