The Frisian comic Redbad by Skelte Siweris Braaksma is now also available in Dutch, published by Uitgeverij Afûk. The release coincides with the major exhibition on King Redbad opening in September. The book is a graphic novel adaptation of the 2011 novel Rêdbâd by Willem Schoorstra and tells the story of the legendary Frisian king.
Redbad is world-famous as the ‘greatest Frisian ever’, but who was he? In the comic, Braaksma paints a picture of what the life of the renowned king might have looked like. From his youth to his death, we follow Redbad through the eyes of his blood brother, as they continually push the boundaries of what is just when a higher purpose is at stake.
The original Frisian edition was published in 2024. In 2025, the book was awarded the Diet Huber Prize for best illustrated Frisian children’s and youth book.
From 5 September 2026 to 7 February 2027, a large-scale exhibition project on King Redbad will take place in the Netherlands and Germany. At the Fries Museum, the world of the early Middle Ages and the legendary king will be brought back to life. The Dutch edition of Redbad is published to coincide with this exhibition.
