Özcan Akyol (b. 1984) is not only a well-known television and radio producer.  He is also a popular columnist. Above all, though, he is the writer of two fierce, high-profile, great novels, Eus and Turis. He also wrote the 2020 Book Week essay, “Generaal Zonder Leger.”

The prolific writer is visiting the library of Drachten. His host? Jacob van der Weij, who, as a former resident of Deventer, loves to tune into Özcan’s radio program, Onze man in Deventer.

During the week of the 76th anniversary of Fryslân’s liberation after the Second World War, Özcan (Eus) will discuss, among other things, the question of how we have dealt with that freedom to today.  How do we safeguard the acquired freedoms of our democracy in a time of rampant populism? Eus also depicts the role of freedom in his own life.

The lecture will be studio-broadcast live from the Drachten library and can be attended digitally via the video-calling program, Zoom. There will also be the opportunity to ask questions by chat.
