Abdelkader Benali writes the essay of the Month of History 2020. The theme of the Month of History, the largest historical event in the Netherlands that takes place every year in October, is East / West this year.

Abdelkader Benali (1975) writes novels, stories, poetry, drama and journalistic work. Seaside Wedding is his internationally acclaimed and award-winning debut. Afterwards he published, among others, the Moroccan cookbook Casa Benali, the children’s book My brother and I and recently the novel The weekend millionaire. In his essay Travelers of a New Age, Benali delves into the unlikely story of frontier Jan Janszoon, a Dutch pirate who converted to Islam in the early seventeenth century and entered Moroccan service.
