ELLA! is a group of people championing literature by women in Friesland. We make women writers and their work more visible and accessible to a broad audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women are less visible in Frisian literature\u2014a field that is already a minority interest due to the language itself. The same applies to people of color, queer individuals, and people from diverse ethnic backgrounds; they are underrepresented in publications, performances, and awards. However, much has changed in recent years: female authors have more space, awards are going to a diverse range of writers, and more initiatives centered on women and literature are emerging. ELLA! aligns with this movement, explicitly giving these groups a place in the literary conversation through lectures, activities, and a presence in literary spaces across Friesland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ELLA! is a growing movement centered on literature by women in Friesland. It brings stories to the public that might otherwise remain overlooked. ELLA! is for everyone\u2014regardless of who you are. The movement welcomes your voice and your presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 1st, 2026, author Karin Amatmoekrim will deliver the inaugural ELLA! lecture, based on her book Grenzend aan liefde \u2013 Een nieuw verhaal over Nederland<\/em> (Bordering on Love \u2013 A New Story About the Netherlands).
Through the ELLA! lecture<\/a>, Leeuwarden City of Literature aims to provide a platform for women writers with important stories to tell.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In addition, there is the ELLA! collective, which meets informally at irregular intervals and with a rotating group of participants. We exchange experiences and information, share what is needed, and devise plans for engaging activities. ELLA! responds to current developments and engages in dialogue with other organizations, striving to address and prevent blind spots and gaps in representation.

The name ELLA! is a tribute to Ella Wassenaer, one of the pseudonyms of the prolific and innovative writer Lipkje Post-Beuckens (1908\u20131983).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
