Meet Me at the Lighthouse (MMATL) literature festival on Schiermonnikoog is created out of a love for literature, culture, and nature. This year, Leeuwarden, UNESCO City of Literature, is also participating, with a mini-edition of Klein geluk (Small Delights).

The program features artists such as Adriaan van Dis, Connie Palmen, Bart Moeyaert, Marjolijn van Heemstra, Ellen Deckwitz, Caspar Janssen, Arjan Hut, Irene Wiersma, Roberta Petzoldt, and of course, author-in-residence Eva Meijer, at unique locations on the island. The programs center around the theme of Twilight, the shift between light and dark, reality and fantasy. MMATL explores these transitional areas through literature, poetry, and nonfiction.

During Arcadia (May 17–August 24, 2025), Leeuwarden UNESCO City of Literature presented 100 literary highlights that appeared throughout Friesland. From fragments to complete texts, each time in a different format. During Meet Me at the Lighthouse, you’ll find a mini-version. At ten locations across the island, you can find texts that explore—and hopefully inspire—everyday happiness and wonder. Can you spot them? With contributions from: Muriel Barbery, Boaz Blume, Esmé van den Boom, Stefan Brijs, Maarten Inghels, Gerard Marcel de Jong, Natalie Koch, Pia Prezelj, Frances Reynolds, and Bernard Wesseling.

During Meet Me at the Lighthouse, the exhibition ‘Lytse Ivichheid – Einleas No’ – Frisian poetry collections on the outside, from the roring to the rotting twenties, curated by Poet of Friesland Arjan Hut will also be on display. For this exhibition, the Poet of Friesland selected 49 cover designs of Frisian-language collections published over the past hundred years. The covers are on display as posters in the public space. During a walk past the posters, he will highlight a number of poets by reading from their work.
